7 tips avoid Facebook hack

People who do have little or no time to maintain Facebook profiles, can do seven things to at least minimize the damage when their account gets hacked, a report has said.

Firstly, change your name. If you tweak your name just a little, or use a nickname, it will be easier for you after the inevitable hack.

Opening more than one account can also help. It violates Facebook's terms of service, but 80 million accounts already do it, says privacy expert John Sileo.

Secondly, stop geotagging your photos. Geotagging includes the latitude and longitude where a picture was taken, the Huff Post reports.

Thirdly, lie about your age as it is a key piece of information needed to steal your identity.

The fourth and one of the most important rules is that do not store your credit card information on the site, the report said.

According to the report, another important step is to 'have some boundaries'. Foe example when Facebook asks you where your photo was taken, keep it to yourself.

Don't brag about new cars, especially if your photos show where you keep the keys in your kitchen, the report said.

The sixth important step is to go through your timeline and remove posts that provide personally identifiable information.

Lastly, deactivate your account. You can't get hacked if you don't have an account, the report said.

And the most important 'bonus Pro Tip' according to the report is: 'Don't use your Facebook password anywhere else. That's making it way too easy for the bad guys.'

App by Airtel founder‘s son a big hit

Hike, the newest kid on mobile instant messaging scene, has had such a wild welcome and adoption rate that it brought the servers down causing disruption in services.

The free mobile app, now on the top of the list on the Android marketplace Google Play Store, has been downloaded over a million times so far. "Signups will not work until 12pm tomorrow - 9th Feb - given the sudden increase in the volume," an official blog post said. "We are working at lightening speed and will get this back up asap."

Hike, launched on 14 November, is the brainchild of Kavin Bharti Mittal, son of Sunil Bharti Mittal founder-chairman of Bharti Airtel, India's largest mobile network with over 180 million subscribers. Hike, was built by BhartiSoftBank, the 50-50 joint venture between Bharti and Japan's mobile operator SoftBank.

Hike differentiates itself from other instant messaging apps such as Whatsapp or Nimbuzz by seamlessly integrating with SMS feature so that a user can easily chat with those that have not installed the app or do not have a smartphone.

With over 850 million mobile subscribers, India's mobile population is one of the largest in the world. With falling SMS usage because of apps like Whatsapp, telecommunication companies have been looking for ways to retain the interest of younger subscribers who prefer that mode of communication to the earlier standard of SMS. Telcos have also been afraid of losing control to instant messaging apps who stand to gain as they generate revenues through advertising. An app like Hike from a telco stable, lets them remain in control.

Kavin Bharti Mittal graduated from Imperial College, London in 2009 with a masters in electrical and electronics engineering as well as management. He has also done short interships at Google and Goldman Sachs while studying at Imprerial College.

Internet search giant Google may release its own Chromebook, some leaked documents have said.

HP announced it would be releasing its own Chromebook last week, but the computer does not contain the features listed in the leaked documents, namely a pretty 'lightbar scheme' in Google colours that appears when you turn the computer on.

According to News.com.au, Google developer Francois Beaufort posted a link to documentation which offered evidence of this so-called "lightbar scheme".

This feature doesn't exist in current Chromebooks, but it could be planned for future computers, such as the rumoured Chromebook 'Pixel' which is rumoured to be a laptop designed by Google engineers, the report said.

Facebook has about 50 million duplicate accounts

Social networking site Facebook has said it is having approximately 50 million duplicate accounts besides 22 million of misclassified and undesirable accounts.

According to a Facebook's statement as on December 31, 2012, it has 1.06 billion monthly active users (MAUs) worldwide including 71 million in India.

"We estimate, for example, that "duplicate" accounts (an account that a user maintains in addition to his or her principal account) may have represented approximately 5.0 per cent of our worldwide MAUs as of December 31, 2012," Facebook said in its report to Securities and Exchange Commission of USA.

Facebook said it identifies "false" accounts, by way of dividing into two categories-- user-misclassified accounts, where users have created personal profiles for a business, organisation, or non-human entity such as a pet and undesirable accounts, which represent user profiles that are determined as intended to be used for purposes that violate the site's terms of service, such as spamming.

"As of December 31, 2012, for example, we estimate user-misclassified accounts may have represented approximately 1.3 per cent of our worldwide MAUs and undesirable accounts may have represented approximately 0.9 per cent of our worldwide MAUs," the report said.

Facebook said it believes the percentage of accounts that are duplicate or false is meaningfully lower in developed markets such as the US or Australia and higher in developing markets such as Indonesia and Turkey.

"As such, our estimation of duplicate or false accounts may not accurately represent the actual number of such accounts. We are continually seeking to improve our ability to identify duplicate or false accounts and estimate the total number of such accounts, and such estimates may change due to improvements or changes in our methodology," the report added.

Facebook claimed to have 1.06 billion MAUs as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 25 per cent from December 31, 2011.

"Users in Brazil, India and Indonesia represented key sources of growth in fiscal 2012 relative to the prior year," the report said.

"We had 67 million MAUs in Brazil as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 81 per cent compared to the same period in 2011; 71 million MAUs in India as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 54 per cent compared to the same period in 2011; 60 million MAUs in Indonesia as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 25 per cent compared to the same period in 2011," it added.

Additionally, the site had 174 million MAUs in the US as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 8 per cent compared to the same period in 2011.

Fujitsu to slash 5,000 jobs by March 2013

Struggling Japanese electronics maker Fujitsu is slashing 5,000 jobs, or nearly 3 percent of its global workforce, as it seeks to boost profitability by reshaping its computer-chip business and its overseas operations.

Fujitsu on Thursday said the job cuts will be completed by the end of this fiscal year next month, and will rely on early retirement, layoffs and other methods. Details were undecided.

Separately, another 4,500 workers will be shifted to other parts of Fujitsu, including a computer chip company being set up with Panasonic, another languishing Japanese electronics maker.

Japan's electronics sector has been floundering, although it's getting a boost recently from the weakening yen.

Last year, Japanese chip maker Elpida Memory filed for bankruptcy after amassing debts from nose-diving prices and competition from Korean rival Samsung.

Airtel: We will invite partners for managed services company

Bharti Airtel it will invite other telecom operators for equity participation in its managed services company, in which it has bought out Alcatel- Lucent's entire stake for an undisclosed amount.

"We just did it so we will talk to companies over a period of time... We would be open to everybody," Bharti Enterprises Deputy Group CEO and MD Akhil Gupta told reporters here.

Asked if the company is open to an alliance with RIL and other dual technology operators, he said: "Not at this point. We have just taken it back and separated it as a company but yes the model will be that we will invite everybody."

Bharti Airtel has said it would buy out Alcatel-Lucent's entire stake in a joint venture company that manages the fixed-line and broadband network for Bharti.

Bharti and the Indian unit of Alcatel-Lucent had formed the 26:74 joint venture, Alcatel Lucent Managed Network Service India Ltd, in 2009 to manage Bharti's fixed-line and broadband networks.

The five-year USD 500 million network contract for the joint venture was to end in April 2014.

Bharti Airtel has said it was introducing a new business model for managing fixed line and DSL broadband networks, on the lines of Indus Towers.

The company's subsidiary Bharti Infratel holds 42 per cent stake in Indus Towers, with the remaining stakes in the company with Vodafone (42 per cent) and Idea (16 per cent).

Bharti Airtel offers broadband, data and telephone services (fixed line) in 87 Indian cities and has a customer base of 3.3 million. Out of them, 1.4 million are subscribed to broadband/Internet services.

Microsoft did not violate 12 Motorola patents: Court

A US judge narrowed a patent lawsuit brought by Google's Motorola Mobility unit against Microsoft, finding that parts of three Motorola patents are invalid.

The ruling on Thursday came from US District Judge James Robart in Seattle, who is overseeing a tandem lawsuit in which Microsoft claims Motorola deserves only a small royalty on many of its telecommunications patents. Google bought Motorola for $12.5 billion, partly for its intellectual property stockpile.

Apple and Microsoft have been litigating in courts around the world against Google and partners such as Samsung Electronics, which use the Android operating system on their mobile devices.

Apple contends that Android is basically a copy of its iOS smartphone software and Microsoft holds patents it contends cover a number of Android features.

Motorola had sought up to $4 billion a year for its wireless and video patents, while Microsoft argues its rival deserves about $1 million a year.

If US District Judge James Robart decides Google deserves only a small royalty, then its Motorola patents would be a weaker bargaining chip for Google to negotiate licensing deals with rivals. A ruling on that issue is expected sometime in the next several weeks.

After Microsoft filed its case over the royalty amounts, Motorola sued Microsoft on three patents that cover video technology. In an order on Thursday, Robart found that parts of those patents are "indefinite," which means Motorola's patent language did not distinctly articulate the invention. Other parts of those patents are still active in the lawsuit.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment and a Microsoft representative could not immediately comment when reached.
The case in US District Court, Western District of Washington is Microsoft Corp vs Motorola Inc, 10-cv-1823.

Apple iPhone 5S, 6 spotted at supplier: Report

Over the past few months, the rumour mill is abuzz with reports about iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 - the two new smartphones that Apple is supposedly working on. Speculations have been rife about the upcoming models, from their prices to colour options and features. Now a report claims that the two smartphones have been spotted for the first time at the facility of an Apple supplier.

A user named Old Yao has claimed on a Chinese microblogging website Sina Tech that a friend of his working with an Apple supplier has seen the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. He revealed that the former looks exactly like iPhone 5, while the latter is longer, wider and thinner. The post also said that the two devices are likely to be launched in 2013.

Previously, TOI reported that Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with KGI Securities, has said that Apple is working on an iPhone 5 successor that will have new features like snappier processor, fingerprint sensor, better camera and more powerful LED flash. Kuo's claim of fingerprint recognition system gains a little credence from Apple's 2012 acquisition of Authentec, which deals with this technology.

The second iPhone will be cheaper and will be same as iPhone 5 but will be a little stockier, said Kuo. Instead of the aluminium body and waistline of 7.6mm, the cheaper iPhone will have a plastic casing and measure 8.2mm around the sides. He also said this device will be available in six colours, a rumour that has done rounds in the past as well.

Technology blog iLounge has also reported about the upgrade in camera sensor, saying that the upcoming phone may have Sony's 13MP unit. The report also says that the two prototypes under development are named N51 and N53.

Wipro chief marketing officer Suchira Iyer quits

SuchiraIyer, chief marketing officer at Wipro, India's third largest software services exporter, has resigned.

Wipro said in a statement that Iyer "has decided to move on to pursue interests outside the organisation."

"We wish her success in all her future endeavours. The company will announce her successor in due course," the Bangalore-based company added in the statement.

Iyer took over as CMO barely a year ago, in April, replacing Rajan Kohli, who now heads the banking vertical for Wipro. A Wipro veteran of 18 years, in her last role, Iyer was the country head for Greater China region, which included mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Shaji Farooq, senior vice president who recently joined Wipro from cross-town rival Infosys will continue to have the overall responsibility of the strategic marketing function at Wipro. Farooq also heads Wipro's advanced technologies practice as well as the global alliances function.

In early 2011, Wipro had dismantled a co-chief executive officer model to appoint TK Kurien as CEO, who has undertaken some restructuring internally.

In Wipro, Iyer has held various leadership roles across different operational areas including sales, strategic alliances, delivery, quality, operations, and talent acquisition.

In her recent interview to ET, Iyer had laid out her plan for repositioning Wipro as a company that addresses and solves client's business challenges rather than a company selling sophisticated technology services. The change, she had said, was necessary in the phase of changing dynamics of technology outsourcing market, where technology decisions are not longer the sole responsibility of chief information officers but other business leaders including CEOs.

Cisco: Search engines prone to cyber attacks

Users are more likely to fall prey to cyber crime through search engines, online ads and social networking websites than pornographic or gambling sites, according to a report by technology giant Cisco.

"Common belief holds that one increases their individual risk to security threats when they seek out illicit content like counterfeit software, online deals, hacking sites or even view pornography," Cisco Vice President (Borderless Networks), India and SAARC, Mahesh Gupta said.

The places users believe are secure are just the opposite -- the modern attacker compromises mainstream online destination that serve mass audiences, he added.

According to Cisco's annual security report, 91 per cent of monitored hits to web pages were split between search engines (36 per cent) like Google, online video sites (22 per cent) like Youtube, advertising networks (13 per cent) or social networks (20 per cent) like Facebook or Twitter.

"Viewing online advertisements are 182 times more likely to deliver malicious content than pornographic sites. Similarly, online shopping sites are 21 times as likely, and search engines 27 times more likely, to deliver malicious content than a counterfeit software site," he said.

The report also suggests that while India remained the spam capital of the world, the US has become a close second in sending out unsolicited emails to Internet users globally in 2012.

While the overall volume of spam generated globally came down 18 per cent from 2011 to 2012, India retained the top spot as a source of spam worldwide generating 12.3 per cent of the world's spam, Cisco said.

The US moved up from the sixth spot in 2011 to second in 2012, while the other top five spam-originating countries were Korea (4.6 per cent), China (4.19 per cent) and Vietnam (4 per cent).

Only three per cent of total spam mails had attachments, versus 25 per cent of valid email, unlike the perception that spam mails have attachments that could lead to users downloading spurious content.

"Spammers are now designing their campaigns to convince users to click on links to visit websites where they can purchase products or services (often dubious). Once the users do that, their personal information is collected, often without their knowledge, or they are compromised in some other way," Gupta said.

A majority of spam comes from groups who seek to sell branded goods, anything from luxury watches to pharmaceuticals that are, in most cases, fake, he added.

The top languages for spam messages in 2012 were English, followed by Russian, Catalan, Japanese, and Danish.
